Ryan Giggs – Top 5 Manchester United Moments

Ryan Giggs has worn many hats during his incredibly long tenure at Manchester United. Lightning quick midfielder, mentor, free kick taker, player-manager, wearer of chest hair. But as this model player (most likely) takes to the field for the last time in a United shirt, we’re looking back on his top five moments as a Red Devil.

5. First goal against Norwich, 1991

When Ryan Joseph Wilson first took to the field for Manchester United, no one would have imagined the indescribable effect he would have on the club. Nevertheless, his first goal against Norwich on September 7, 1991, will always be a special one.

4. The worst attempt on goal in history, 1999

United went into stoppage time in the 1999 Champions League final trailing 0-1 to Bayern Munich, and staring defeat in the face. But as the club has done so many times in the past, they turned things around. This comeback was triggered by Giggs’ woeful shot towards goal, which Teddy Sheringham turned into the goal for an equalizer. It was a terrible shot, but no United fan will care.

3. THAT derby, 2009

Manchester City may have begun to colour the city slightly blue, but Giggs would have none of it. He turned in an absolutely sublime performance in the game, and it was his slick pass that provided the opening for Michael Owen to win it for the Devils in the 96th minute of the game.

2. Proving them wrong, 2003

By 2003, a lot of people were writing Giggs off as a spent force. But, as he has done so many other times, he set out to prove them wrong. And boy, did he do so. He came off the bench in Turin to score a brace, including a wonderful solo effort, to show the world that he was still a player to reckon with.

1. The chest rug, 1999

United were on course for the Treble, but suddenly were facing defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the FA Cup. One man down, they were in trouble. And then Giggsy intercepted the wayward pass from Patrick Vieira, and blazed toward the Arsenal goal. One, two, three, four defenders fell before him, before he blasted it into the top of the goal. His chest-baring run after scoring is almost as memorable as the one that he made to score the goal.

As we look back on a wonderful career, we can only say one thing – it’s been a wonderful run from Giggs.
